Driving: I refuse to start until my parents can prove to me that they will treat me like older kid

Posted Friday October 9 2020, 4:28 pm

I am 16 years old, (almost 17), and I am really sad that I haven't started driving yet, but I refuse to start until my parents can prove to me that they will treat me like older kid when I start driving. They make me walk my dog with my 13 and 11 year old siblings (yes it's true), and they make me sit in the backseat of the car so my 13 year old sibling can get the front seat over me (again, yes you read that correctly), all while claiming that they'll be just as fair as any other parent when their kid starts driving. I also have a job, so how can I make sure they will trust me with a car (that I will pay for) when I start driving?

Burned oil smell

Posted Monday January 27 2020, 5:19 am

I didn't pay attention to the light on my dash which meant my 2012 Chevy sonic needed servicing. Its been there a few months. She started overheating a week ago and it turns out I needed water. No crazy lights went off or anything. Mechanic changed oil and put water in. She runs smooth again & the 'needs servicing' light is out but when I drive I smell a burned idk...oil or burned rubber smell. Like I said before she runs smooth again. Is my car going to blow up? Will a diagnostic test tell me anything?

Car radiator water drying up when using aircon

Posted Friday April 20 2018, 12:53 pm

Hi. My car is an old 1998 Nissan but still in a good condition. I've been using it for about four years now. I haven't been using the aircon since I bought it the car from my sister because it had a faulty compressor. I fixed the compressor yesterday and the aircon is working fine but the water in the car's radiator starts to dry up after a short drive (even though the radiator had been working perfectly fine before the aircon incident, and still works perfectly if I don't use the aircon). What can I do to stop the radiator water drying up? I can't get a brand new radiator even if I wanted to, because it is an old car. Even if I buy a fairly used radiator, there's no guarantee that it will be as good as my current one. Your advice will be much appreciated.

Posted Friday January 8 2016, 12:37 pm

Hey guys !
I'm trying to choose my type of car here and I think having a huge SUV is a great idea, so this may be too typical of me to ask but I really would like to know what do you call the EXACT height/distance between the bottom of the vehicle's door and the ground. Like I need the exact name in order to google it. Yes i need to sit that high off other vehicles xP

Thank you so much for your time

Didn't pay the toll.

Posted Friday June 6 2014, 5:39 pm

I'm 19, female, junior in college. All of my college friends live in different states and my parent's don't trust me enough to drive there so I told them I was visiting my old roommate who is living at school this summer for a job and I actually drove to Jersey to visit my one friend there. As I was leaving Jersey to go back to Pennsylvania I had to go through a toll on 202. I was in the EZ pass lane and had tried to get into the payment lane but could not so I went through the EZ pass lane and I didn't have an EZ pass. I'm terrified they're gonna send me a letter telling me that I need to pay which would be totally fine but my parents are going to see that I didn't really go where I said I was going. How can I ensure that I take care of th...

Snow Chains

Posted Monday May 19 2014, 6:45 am

The weather here isn't normally this miserable so I have no idea about snow chains, but now I need some because certain roads here are closed unless you have some! What do I need to know before I get some? Where do you buy snow chains anyway? Tire stores only or do dealerships carry them? Are there different kinds?

Buy a car or fix the one I have...?

Posted Thursday April 24 2014, 6:09 pm

I have a 2009 Ford.

Its completely paid for. Big positive.

But it needs mechanical work. Big negative.

Big leak in the transmission (estimate of $1500 - $3000).
Needs new tires (2 x $125).
Minor body work (estimate $500).

And the car gets awful gas mileage, 14- 16 miles per gallon, $50 every 5 days in gasoline.

82,000 miles. Estimated appraisal of car would be $8500-12,000.

Despite these negatives, I love this car.

Very comfortable - fun to drive - roomy - large trunk - excellent leg and head room - great heat / air - great sound system.

My options are to make bare basic repairs to the car in order to se...

Tips on buying a car from dealership?

Posted Thursday March 27 2014, 2:05 am

Hello advicenators,

I am going to be buying a "new used" car pretty soon. I got a new job recently and I will be able to afford the payments. Im looking to spend somewhere in the $18-25,000 range. I don't want to buy something I'll regret with that amount of money. I have never bought from a dealership before.

What are some tips? What are some things I should look out for (Any salesmen tricks I should be wary of, or extra things that I shouldn't be paying for?) I'm a girl in my 20s that knows pretty much nothing about cars (other than how to fill up oil and change a tire-the basics) and I totally expect to be taken advantage of when it comes to cars. I'm not stupid but there's a lot of car stuff I don...
