My horse WON'T take a bit, any suggestions?

Posted Wednesday January 2 2013, 1:10 pm

sorry this might be a little long!

Ok so ive got a horse that will NOT take a bit, and i need suggestions on how i can make him take it without inflicting any pain, stress, etc. on him.

here's a little info bout him and my attempts:

he is an 8 year old sorrel paso fino quarter horse mix (he is a gelding)
i ride western and i use a egg butt bit, and i have a one ear piece headstall.
he has always had a kinda short temper.

he has never had a bit that put pain on his mouth.
he is used to me riding him at times. i don't ride him as often as i like because he has bucked me off, and school and stuff like that :\

I don't always lunge him before i rid...

Is this poem ok?

Posted Sunday December 30 2012, 5:09 pm

I've posted other poems about love and my nan passing, this poem is about my first ever pet. hope you enjoy.please post honest comments. =)

They were all so similar, but exeedingly cute
Finley,Fred,Lucky and Loot (it was a name it also fits in)
Then there you was in the corner, moody from tail to jaw
Hissing and scratching, showing tiny every claw.

The name Lilly did'nt suit you, they are pretty and small
And you was a killer. As social as the floor.
“I want that one” I say and point to the green eyed beast.
“no way” mom says not impressed the least.
with a chuckle dad says “that ones got spirit!”
So he chased you around you acting like a whippe...

Old female dog started messing our house :/

Posted Wednesday December 5 2012, 10:29 am

Hi everyone! This is a toughy but I feel so sorry for her and would love to help her.

My boyfriend has had a staffie cross (I think) for the past 2/3 years, she was 3 or so when he got her and she didn't have a great life before. She was raised by drug dealers essentially to attack people and I believe she was beaten about a few times as well, now my boyfriend has her and has made her a very friendly and well behaved dog. She used to have accidents but I don't think it was very often before, now however, whenever we get home theres a poo/wee on the floor. We take her out before bed, in the morning and before we go out and we never leave her long, the past 2 times we've been gone less than an hour and took her out just before...

What Kind of Watch Dog Should I Get?

Posted Wednesday November 28 2012, 4:29 pm

I need a good watch dog. I've had a doberman and german shepherd that I liked very much because they were sweet to people they knew and scary to people they didn't. Later, I got a golden retriever, which was much less intimidating, but made a better watch dog than I'd think and was the best all around dog I've ever had. Ever since he died a year and a half ago, I've thought about getting another one, but am scared it wouldn't be as good of a watch dog. There are some cute saint bernard puppies for sale and I've heard that they make very good dogs, but my only worry is how big the thing will get. My uncle had a saint bernard rotwieller mix that looked more like a horse than a dog. I wouldn't mind having a big dog if I thought it'd be happy i...

Multi-species house: Cat and rabbit as pets together?

Posted Saturday November 10 2012, 11:34 pm

I really need advice from someone who knows a lot about pets, please I don't want any answers that are just "good guesses". Two weeks ago, I adopted a ten week old kitten. I also have owned an indoor rabbit for a year, but he is almost two years old. Both animals are male. The cat fights with the rabbit, which is a given, as cats are predatory animals. I cannot tell how the rabbit feels about the cat. I keep the rabbit locked in his cage when I am not home, and when I sleep. When I let the rabbit out he does his mostly normal business, and the kitten tries to play with him, pawing and pouncing at him. The rabbit does run, but not to his cage, just a couple feet away. Sometimes the rabbit will approach the cat. I’m not sure if th...

Is my cat in pain?

Posted Sunday October 28 2012, 6:15 pm

My cat appears to have cataracts but there are more issues than that (in my opinion). Could you tell me if he is in pain? We cannot afford a cataract surgery, thus we have two options. Either putting him down (which will ONLY occur if my father and I feel he is in pain) or to let him keep on keepin' on. Here is a picture to help you see what is going on: http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m141/gvastola/IMG_0117.jpg
Thank you so much in advance for all your help, I really appreciate it.

My new running buddy is gonna be a 130lb German Shepherd

Posted Tuesday October 16 2012, 7:22 pm

Hi!
I'm 25, and a girl - woman? Something. Because this may matter, I'm also 5'3" and about 117lbs. I'm a runner. I have essentially zero experience with dogs, as I've been afraid of them my whole life. A couple of years ago, I found something scarier, and my fear of dogs just... disappeared.
So, I know this dog. He belongs to my boyfriend, and I've taken him on walks and stuff. He listens to me, for the most part, but he's 2 years old, and VERY high energy for such a big dog.

Being in the field of psychology, I'm very aware at all times of what kind of energy I'm giving off. This dog picks up on vibes like crazy. If I calm down, so does the dog. If I get riled up, he does, too. If I'm upset, he noses my...

Why is my betta fish developing red lines on its fins? Is this healthy?

Posted Tuesday October 16 2012, 11:55 am

http://i45.tinypic.com/1085lig.jpg

I just bought the fish less than a week ago from a pet store. It was in a tiny container, and then I moved it to my 1 gallon sized tank. I know it's better if the tank is bigger but tanks are expensive and I wouldn't have enough room in my dorm room. I've never owned a fish before, much less any animal, so I worry about my fish a lot.

The purple rocks are hermit crab gravel (which is anti ammonia), if that makes any difference. When I first bought the fish, the fins in the front (the reddest ones) were red, and the rest of the fish was blue, white, and purple. Then slowly I've noticed it develop the red on the fins and I'm starting to freak out. I've already changed the water ...

Boyfriend's dog chases cats, my cat is my baby; we want to live together

Posted Saturday October 6 2012, 8:17 pm

Hi, 24/f.
So, my boyfriend and I have been together about a year, and we live an hour or so apart. Because of the distance, and our insane work schedules, we don't see each other a whole lot. So when I have a three-day weekend, I pack up my kitty, and the two of us stay with him for awhile. We plan to move in together eventually.
He has a two-year-old German shepherd who outweighs me by about 15 pounds, so he's a big guy. I'm kinda falling in love with him and his sweet brown eyes, which is huge for me, as someone who's been afraid of dogs most of her life.

My cat is about five. She's my baby - as in, when something scares her, she runs to me instead of hiding, and she sleeps with me every night. Needless to sa...

My cats pee in any open box

Posted Friday September 21 2012, 1:31 pm

We have two cats - they are a male and female, neutered, and littermates. They have always gotten along well and still do. They are indoor cats only.

The problem is that they view any open box as a potential litterbox. This behavior started about a year ago when we moved from Texas to Colorado. We had to home them with a family member until we got settled, and then they cam to live with us again. Ever since then, we can't leave a box open anywhere. Cardboard boxes or plastic bins, filled with toys or tools or papers... if it's open and large enough to hold a cat, it's a toilet.

We haven't been able to catch them in the act, so I don't know if it's both of them or just one. They have two litterboxes which...

CAT PARASITES???

Posted Friday September 7 2012, 5:30 am

I just adopted a year old cat from the humane society and took her to a free exam at a local vet.

She's completely healthy but the vet said I should bring in a fecal sample to test for internal parasites.

He really scared me with all the talk of how they can harm humans. But they're really expensive and with buying the cat and all her things I can't really afford that this month.

I would like some advice from experienced pet owners, please.

Do you have your cat tested for internal parasites even if they're completely healthy?

Are they THAT big of a threat to humans as long as you wash your hands after cleaning the litter box and before you eat?

I mean...
