On average, a woman's menstrual cycle is 28 days. The first day of the perod is referred to as the 1st day. Ovulation occurs, on average, on the 14th day, exactly in the middle between two periods.
Ovulation is the process of an ovary releasing an egg to be fertilized by a sperm. The egg only lives for about 24 hours. However, sperm can live inside a woman's body for 3-5 days, and it is very difficult to pinpoint exactly when ovulation occurs. For this reason, a woman is most fertile for several days before and a day or two after the predicted ovulation.
So, it's not really "before" or "after" - it's in between.
However, every woman operates on a different schedule, it is very hard to know exactly when ovulation happens, and crazy things happen - so it is best to always use protection if you wish to avoid pregnancy, no matter what time of the month it is!
There are various free apps you can use on your phone that will give you estimations of your ovulation and predict your next period - search for My Cycles or Period Tracker. You can also go to mymonthlycycles.com.
