First you have to understand that a younger puppy can only hold it's bladder for about one hour for every month old it is. Therefore if you have a younger puppy, depending on it's age, you will either need to set something up to where someone can let it out when it needs it or you can put a potty pad in there with it. I prefer the first method because you want to try and avoid teaching your puppy to pee and poo in his crate. However, sometimes people with careers during the day must use the potty pad method. That's okay to do until they get old enough to hold their bladder. Okay so I like to set up a puppy crate like this... You don't want it too big. You want it just big enough so that they can stand up and turn around. This will make it less likely that they will potty or bark. They usually just lay down and rest. I like to use an old blanket for puppies as opposed to the nice inserts for them to lay on because if there is an accident (you'll definitely have a few with a pup) you can just simply throw it into the wash machine. Also, and probably the most important, make sure they have PLENTY to chew on. This doesn't mean fit 20 toys into a tiny crate but put in good heavy duty toys and stimulating toys that will keep them entertained throughout the day. Typically dogs don't mind being in a crate as much if you do this. If possible I would suggest gradually introducing them to the crate. For the first day just do it for an hour and then increase to the full time you would need them in there. The last thing to remember is NEVER put them in their crate as punishment. This is a huge mistake. It will make your dog associate being in trouble with being in their crate. This will make them dislike their crate. You want them to feel like their crate is a good place, where they can feel comfortable while you are away, not a place of punishment. I think that's all I have!
