very young baby kitten

Question Posted Wednesday May 14 2014, 3:20 am

My friend found a baby kitten at her work and I ended up taking it because she couldn't. It looks about no more than 2 weeks. It can bearly hold its head up and shakes when it walks, its eyes are fully open and it fits in the palm of your hand. I have a bottle for it and it takes a few drinks then pushes away. How do you know how much to feed it? Do you know exactly how old it i? Do you know what I need to do for a kitten this young? Please help!!!

Better visit a veterinary doctor who can give proper advice.

Ok well I'm pretty sure you should look how much to feed it up online. But you should take it to a vet for sure because it may need special nutrients that cows milk does not give it and the cat mom's milk also helps to fight off an infection so you should definitely take it to a vet.

If you feed the cat and it doesn't eat anymore, it probably mean it's not hungry anymore.
I'm not really sure too because I had never own a cat. But you can also look it up online.

Aww that is very cute, but I would bring it to a vet to see what it needs and then figure out what you need to buy him or her ;)

The best thing to do is to take it to the vet but if you cant do that then I would call them and ask them for basic information because its pretty much impossible to take care of it without talking to a trained professional.

I would call a vet, explain what you wrote here and see what they recommend. It sounds like it is very young, so feeding it with the bottle is probably best. But a vet will be able to tell you how much to feed it and how often. Unfortunately I wish I could be more help, really just talking to a vet will be best. They will be able to tell you what to do and what not to do. And maybe even what age range it is. I hope this works out! It sounds like you are doing the right thing for the kitten. Good on you for taking in the kitten! Message me if you have any more questions.

I don't have any knowledge about kittens at all. My best best would be to contact and animal shelter or the SPCA. Tell them that you found a kitten you want to keep and would like to know the proper procedures and caring instructions. They know all of this stuff so it would be far better than looking for answers online.

On August 6th it will be five years since I adopted an abandoned baby kitten my daughter found in the wheel of a car! He was missing part of his tail and was infested with everything from ear mites to round worms! I took him to the vet and got him treated and he now holds the title of "world's most spoiled cat"! I would advise taking him to vet ASAP and then follow his recommendations on feeding. I fed my boy kitten replacement formula in a small bottle the pet store sells for that purpose. You could also place a covered hot water bottle in the box with the kitty(just make sure the water isn't too hot)and place a stuffed animal in to snuggle with. I would try him with the milk about every half hour at least unless the vet tells you otherwise. Like your kitty mine was still wobbley and I could hold him in the palm of my hand. Since he is solid black we named him Salem but we nicknamed him "Itty" because he was so small. He weighs 9 lbs. now but compared to our other boy who weighs 20 lbs. he is still an Itty Bitty! Good luck with your kitty, I hope he brings you as much love and outright fun as my dear boy has brought to mine! Good luck!

I do apologize I do not know much information on baby kittens. However you can try contacting your local vet and they can answer a lot of the questions you have. Good luck.

Ok, so this kitten should not have been taken from its mother yet, it is not ready to be weaned. I'm not sure how old it is. You have to work on keeping it warm and if it only eats a little at first its ok. There is kitten replacement milk and you really need to get that as it helps them get used to it and the nipple will be the right size. Let it knead you with its paws as it nurses and try and make sure it eats a lot everyday. the transition to dry food should be gradual and not for a long time. Only use kitten formula cat food and try and soak it in kitten replacement milk during the transition and keeping it warm. It should sleep a lot, so don't be worried about that part. That's a very young baby and sometimes the mothers cant even take care of tem as much as they need so try not and get too attached. there is a decent chance, but don't bet on it. Look up extensive care options for it and the best of luck!

It sounds like the kitten is quite young, just as you mentioned. The kitten will push away if it isn't hungry anymore so it's okay if she pushes the bottle away. Also, you may want to try and keep the kitten on a schedule of when you are going to feed it. I'd say feed it about 3-4 times a day (kittens are quite hungry little creatures). If you feel like you can manage to take care of the kitten then keep up the great work. If not, I don't know if you'd want to take it to a shelter but you could always put ads up about the kitten. I hope this helped.

Are you in the UK? If so there's free PDSA vets. And private vets usually have an arrangement that they can recover the cost of treating animals that are bought in with no apparent owner. I've taken an injured animal (always cats as it happens) to a vet a few times and he told me that, and was as good as his word each time. One got loads of treatment (hit by a car). Or if funds permit, and you want a cat, pick up the bill yourself. I'm sure the little chap's worth it. Very young, you'll need a little help probably. Good luck, hope he/she pulls through. At the very least you've already given the little tyke a fighting chance. Nice one. X

This has actually happened to me a few years back so hopefully I can be of some help. First thing first, take it to the Vet. He can give you an estimate of how old the kitten is and gender and all those other things. But as well he can tell you if it's healthy and what needs to be done for it. I believe I use to feed the kitten three times a day but the vet will be able to give you the majority of the details about caring for it. And if you don't wish to keep it then you can take it in to the SPCA. Taking care of a baby kitten though is a lot of work and you have to be willing to be up late and early to tend to it Hopefully I've helped :) if you need anymore advice lovely feel free to inbox me.

I don't know a ton about kittens, but if it is as young as you think, you might want to check around for kitten milk replacement. Look online for a forum about cats. Post a couple of pictures there and they will be a great help. I use a bunny forum to get help for my rabbits. I know there are a couple similar cat forums. Good luck!

My best advice would be to take it to a vet. For all you know, it could be sick and need immediate medical attention. Not to mention, it probably hasn't been vaccinated yet.

Dragonflymagic answered Wednesday May 14 2014, 12:32 pm:
Most people get kittens when they are old enough to be weaned and taken away from mom and adopted. Either this kitten was the runt of the litter and rejected or it somehow got separated from mother and may be very young. I doubt that anyone here is going to know what care to give a very young kitten. Thats better asked of a vetrinarian. Its critical you find out how to care properly for such a young kitten asap or it may die.
iF you don't have the money for a vet visit, try searching first for low cost vets in the area, call them and tell them the situation, exactly what you told us how you came across the kitten, how many days you've had it. Ask if they can give advice over the phone or need to see it and how much it would cost or do they have any pet rescue type agency that rescues and nurtures animals back to health in the area that they can direct you to. If they don't know, try other vets until you find such a place, they're most likely to help the kitten to survive and thrive and show you what to do for minimal or no cost. I think such agencies survive on donated money and volunteer help.
Good luck.
