Weird posing trends?

Question Posted Friday March 7 2014, 7:30 pm

Why is it so popular for girls to look constipated or like they're eating their sweater/necklace, or make a duck face in pictures? Or the ones where they take their smartphone and stand infront of the mirror, taking pictures looking at the display of their smartphone and not even at the camera? I understand that you maybe want your full body to be on the picture but why look at the display when you're taking it?
Wherever I go, I see these pictures on facebook/instagram etc.
I personally don't know why they're so popular. I mean there is nothing really beautiful about making a weird face, like you're either smelling something bad or have to go to the bathroom.
Yes, some of these girls do have a pretty face, but why make these weird expressions instead of just smiling or at least have a normal facial expression? ._. I don't mean to offend anyone who does this but where did this trend come from and why is it so incredibly popular?
Why is it even considered to be attractive and what's so attractive about it? Maybe I'm just weird and can't see it .. When I'm hanging out with friends and have this sort of facial expression I get asked if everything is okay with me. So why is it so incredibly normal to take pictures like this? ._. This is a serious question, I don't mean to rant but I'd really want to know where this came from.

Personally i never understood this either but your question made me think. My mother is a photographer and thanks to her i have an endless portfolio of artistic and beautiful photos of myself and my younger sister. But what if she wasnt a photographer? Well i guess i would be doing the same thing as tjose girls. I find it very concerning when i find an album on someones facebook and every single photo is a duck face. It makes me think that some people dont understand art and they lack creativity. I have learnt from my mother that a photo is far more than just an image on a piece of paper because behind that image there is a story and great effort. Ive never taken selfies with a duck face or anything like that instead i took time and effort to make it into something fun with my friends. Last week i borrowed my mothers camera and went out with my friend to the park to do a photoshoot with her because we thought that it made a beautiful background we took turns with the camera we tried different poses (and none of them included constipated smiles and ducks) when we got home we took time to edit the photos and change the lighting and colours. The results were far more satisfying than a quick selfie. Sometimes using props or unique outfits can also be fun (me and my friend went out wearing bright colour because the theme of the photoshoot was meant to be fun. We looked so different from everyone else :D) Now that ive learnt these things i guess i would never do anything like a duckface because it just doesnt satisfy me :). Some people say that they can not afford a professional camera but i do not think that thats an excuse. You can take a great picture with your phone if you have the correct lighting and background :) i did this a few times and most people thought that i used a professional camera :D

Well, for one thing, if it wasn't for the technology of today that put cell phones with image taking abilities in them, we would not have this phenomenon.

Before camera phones, was the digital camera. I never thought to take a 'Selfie' as a self taken photo on cells is called, at least never thought to do it with an actual digital camera by just holding it out as far away as my arm could go. My digital camera had instructions which were difficult to follow and remember to use the timer and then go pose in place to take a photo of yourself.....the original selfie that was taken by yourself but using a timer not your finger on the button. Now I had done that but found it frustrating, never got quite rightly centered in the photo and took probably 25 shots and came away with 4 I felt were artistically pleasing to the eye and a very flattering representation of me. It was a very time consuming process and quite frustrating for me. I am in my fifties and husband and I have taken selfie shots of the two of us to post to show family, us with the woods we were hiking in or recently in a snow flurry. There was no third person to take the photo. If there was, I'd go for that but I use it to record a piece of our life. In fact, we'll take several and hubby who isn't photo-genic to begin with will toss out certain ones as not 'postable to facebook'. We always use the ones in which we look the least goofy or weird but still looks like us, not the most flattering angle shot maybe but still a good representation of what we really look like. I know only a few people use it more artistically as I do. I am one of the few who want it attractive as you do. I and hubby are both very artistic people. So we have to like our finished piece and see some value in it beyond it just being another quick instant shot of ourselves.
Here's one really good article on selfies and how and why the writer believes it came to be so popular.

It has actually been said that selfies help with young girls self esteem. I know that some people might have harsh comments on a selfie photo but when I see the comments on my facebook page of someones selfie, the majority are always extremely positive. Low self image and comparing theirselves to the images portrayed to us of celebrities in the media, those are unrealistic. We can never obtain those looks. So when girls can feel comfortable and good about themselves when posting the 'duck face' type of photos of themselves, I say that's a step in the right direction.
The next step would be as they become adults is to feel good about themselves, and confident before ever getting facebook, twitter or instagram feedback on themselves.

Can it become an addiction for a person? I suppose it could. Anyone can over do too much of anything. However overdoing selfies, I don't find as harmful as over doing drinking or pot or gambling, etc.....
You raised an interesting serious question and I enjoyed putting in my thoughts about it.

Piece of advice from me, some one who finds most selfies stupid, dorky etc.... just skim over and ignore them. You don't need to make a comment if you find them disgusting. My niece has recently colored her black hair fire engine red, purple, and other colors and keeps re dyiing it and posting selfies of the results. I personally find them hideous so I make no comment at all.

I only comment on any I find personally attractive for my tastes. Everyone has different tastes in things. Thats a given. I only comment on ones that I like because I want to be truthful and also give supportive or uplifting compliments. If I can't say something that will be positive, then I follow the advice from Walt Disney's Bambi movie in which Thumper says that his mom said, "If you can't say anything nice, then don't say anything at all."
