Automotive repair shops

Question Posted Monday March 3 2014, 11:03 am

How do you take your car in for repair without being cheated? I took my car in once for brakes and they changed belts and shocks and other things without asking me. I had to go to work so I couldn't do anything about it, but I don't want it to happen again. That lady working there really saw me coming and knew just how to play me. :(

The only way I know not to get ripped off that way is to use a repair shop that someone you know and trust has recommended to you. I use the dealership where I purchased my car. I know I can find shops that will charge less but I have found that this dealer has taken very good care of my car and has not ripped me off.

I have purchased two cars from them and will purchase a third from them. The second car purchase was predicated not so much on the front of the dealership but the back of the dealership and I have said so to the owner. As long as they continue to care for my car as their own I will continue to purchase cars there.

You are less likely to get ripped off at service a center that knows you. I also got lucky at a Midas shop where I took a car once and ask for several things to be done including a complete brake job. When I came to pick up the car the bill was much less than expected. The shop manager told me he felt I didn't need some of the work I requested so he didn't do it and I only needed front brakes.

Did I get lucky or maybe it was because I was at the time a firefighter and it was just after 9/11. I really don't know maybe I just found an honest repair shop.

What you should do is file a complaint with the better business bureau over the unauthorized work. They may be able to get some or all of the cost of the unauthorized work back for you. IF this was a franchised shop such as a Midas or Goodyear write the company and complain as well. The franchise does not like their shops cheating customers it hurts the entire chain when one does.

Find a place to do your minor service such as oil changes and tire rotations and will do those while you wait. Then when you need major work done they know you and are less likely to rip you off.
