I would suggest you take the job that is in hand. If the interview you had turns into a job offer and it is a better job than the one you have then you can resign and take the other position, It is the old saying the "Bird in Hand is Worth Two in the Bush"

The job you interviewed for is not a sure thing. Waiting on an offer is like betting on the come. Should an offer not come through then you have nothing and have to start over. This company seems to want you if they are finding an inside position for you when you were offered an outside position. To me it would seem they understand that you need to earn money to fix your car or replace it, so they are making that possible for you. I would say they are placing a lot of value in you to do this for you.

Then there is the other factor to consider. Even though the economy is what it is and unemployment is what it is. Employers looking for new help place a lot more trust in hiring someone that is employed when they interview than someone who is not. Meaning that two equally qualified candidates for the same position one of whom is employed and the other is not. Most employers will offer the position to the candidate who is employed.

I can't explain why it is done that way though I have done it myself. As I said it has something to do with placing trust in the person you are offering the position to. The employed person earns more trust than the unemployed person.

So take the job offered even if it is not your first choice and continue to look for a better position.
