Names for a female black cat

Question Posted Tuesday October 29 2013, 9:26 am

I wasn't really sure what category to put this in, but I guess it's kind of a pet question...
So, I've decided to write a story about a homeless black cat (I have a black cat, so she inspired me), but I don't know what to name her. The name is probably going to be the title, so I need something that really stands out. In other words, I need a name for a female black cat (And please, nothing like 'cutie' or 'brownie' or anything like that) that sounds kind of sweet and simple. Thank you!

Well, first off congratulations on your ambition and decision to write a story. Writing is a special talent and I commend you for taking on the task. That being said, naming character (including animals) is very important and I can understand why you want to get this decision right.

I've got a few suggestions that might help you out. The first three that come to mind are:

Onyx
Charcoal
Midnight

If you're just going for the tone of the name, Onyx has the most interesting sound of the bunch. However, I would advise you to consider the personality or traits of the cat in your story before choosing the name too. For example, with the three ideas I listed above, the name Onyx is a gemstone and would fit well with a cat that has classy qualities or is a bit aloof. Charcoal tends to be a dirty, gritty substance and thus might be better suited for an animal on the streets. Midnight indicated darkness and possibly scariness. So a name like that would be good for a pet that is a bit creepy. Do you see what I mean?

Good luck, I hope your story turns out amazing.

Uhm... total dork moment Luna. like the Sailor Moon cat.
but that is totally not original so probably not that.
When I think of black cats i think of mysterious withdraw something kind of like a southern name you'd find in those witchcrafty areas in Louisiana.
Ambrosia
Amielean or Adelalean... probably not how you spell that name though.
Belladonn or Belladonna or even Isabelle, Isabella
Renee
Louisee
Celeste
Deliah
Felicia
Rosa lynn.. actually a lot of Lynn names like Anna Lynn Emma Lynn

but yeah I know those are more human like names but those are what I got.

Thing of things that might be black in color and start looking them up on line to get more ideas. Sometimes the name for such a thing or the word black in another language. I have looked up a few, the rest of web surfing for ideas is up to you.

Negrita: a black fish in the sea bass family

Onyx:black gemstone
Obsidian: black gemstone
Jet: black gemstone

Raven: a black bird
Crow: a black bird

Kuro: Japanese word for black
Shipita: word for black in Native Crow.tribe

or check out this list of names for black cats and dogs.
I didn't think of this one but Licorice is on that list and would be a cute cat name.
