My year old cat has started lounging in her litter box. I walk into my room and she's sitting in or laying down in her own filth and obviously she doesn't really understand. Anyone know why she is doing this?
Some cats may squat in their little box to 'guard' it from new people or animals (especially other cats). This is normal, yet annoying.
Despite that tho, you still need to take her to the vet ASAP. The behaviour could be linked to urinary tract infections, or bladder infections, or even kidney issues. Those are problems that could become life-threatening if they are left untreated. She could be also be pregnant, if she isn't spayed.
If the vet gives her a clean bill of health - then you need to give your kitty a better place to sleep. An enclosed place ideally, with a blanket that smells like her. A cardboard box might do just fine. Similarly, taking the top off your little box (if it has a cover) will make it a less inviting place for her to be.
