STD only just now showed up (Need a reply soon!)

Question Posted Sunday March 24 2013, 8:29 pm

Hey, so in the past 2 years I've been tested 4 times for every STD, and I say it because its relevant, I haven't had sex in those ENTIRE 2 years, no kissing, no oral, and no "petting". But only recenly in my last test did my doctor say it's a possibility and I need further testing. How is that possible??? I don't even share water and drinks with people, how is it possible an STD is showing up now???

Additional info, added Monday March 25 2013, 8:54 pm:
I took the tests because in my area taking a pee test is normal, and at the gynecologist it is a standard procedure to test .

I only took the tests because they are regularly screened for at my OB/GYN, it's all apart of the routine exam in the area I live and with my health insurance it's free so I allow it. But this time I have gone to a different doctor who uses a different laboratory, so I am worried because if this is an STD or something worse, I'm wondering why they didn't catch it sooner at the other doctor.

First: Don't freak out until the doctor tells you that you indeed do have an STD. Something else could have showed up in the testing that the doctor wants to confirm with another test. It is also very possible that a false positive result was returned.

If you have been seeing the same doctor for two years and the doctor is aware that you have not been sexually active in those two years. Then a positive result would want to be confirmed with a second test.

Second: There are two other possibilities here. Some STDS have extremely long incubation periods, although two years is at an extreme end. The other is that labs have become better at detecting things and while you may not actually be infected you could be a carrier for something, also a long shot option.

Really the best thing to do is to allow the doctor to run whatever test is required and wait for the results. The doctor is questioning the results and wants another test. If the doctor was sure something was wrong you would have been told. So for know try and relax and wait until you have something to worry about.

I know easier said then done. Have the test done. The sooner it is the done the sooner you will know if you have anything to worry about.

Why are you being tested every 2 years if you are having zero sexual contact? I'm just curious. That's a lot of testing to pay for.

Anyways, there are STDs with very long incubation periods, which could account for it only showing up now.

If you are a women and got an 'irregular results' on your pap - that isn't necessarily an STD. That can be other forms of bacteria or infections as well.

On a side note: The only way you are going to get an STD off a toilet seat is if you having sex with someone on the that toilet seat.

Go back to your doctor and get the follow up test. Try not to freak out in the meantime.

Well it depends on which STD... Some could incubate for a fairly long time before showing up on a test. Maybe the latest test was more inclusive than previous ones? It could just be a false positive, the doctor did just say you need further testing not that you definitely have one. Also, public toilets are a possibility. The chance of it happening is greatly exaggerated in media/legend, but it can technically happen.

I'm kinda curious though. If you aren't active, why are you getting such regular tests?
