Electric car info

Question Posted Friday October 22 2010, 11:47 pm

I have been wondering about Full electric cars lately. Some info would help me with my thinking. How small can the battery be, but last a good while as well? What is the average time it takes for one to re-charge?

To recharge an electric car it takes about eight hours to recharge. So it is better to recharge at night when electricity is cheaper. Some electric vehicles are sold with the charger on the machine such as those of this company [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

I really don't know much about cars--electric or otherwise. I am in no way a mechanic or a person qualified to really answer this sort of question with positive advice and information.

With that being said, I did take a gander around the good old Google and see if I could come up with any of this sort of information. Wikipedia had a surprisingly informative article about this sort of thing. The link to the battery portion of the article is here:

There it lists everything from the different types of batteries you can purchase (or even rent) for an electric car, as well as an estimated time they are going to last per size of vehicle. They also have a section that is about charging or replacing batteries. Now, some of that gets into some math, and, unfortunately, I am also extremely bad when it comes to nearly all mathematics. I do hope you have a better grasp on that sort of information than I do.

Reading on that, there is no way I can even reword all of that great information into something that is clear and precise. I usually hate just giving out a link and saying, "There it is," but, in all seriousness, there's no way I could restate all of that. I mean, it goes from average charging time to doing things that make charging even faster. Yeah.

So, I hope that helps you out quite a bit. I apologize for not knowing more about vehicles or the batteries that electric cars run on. It it helps, addition information I found said:

"A 500 lb nimh pack will get an average size car 100 mi, charge in 4 hours, and last >10 years."

Beyond that, I have no idea what any of this sort of thing means in the long run when it comes to the mathematic equations and battery differences.
