foods for a beginner to cook?

Question Posted Sunday June 22 2008, 8:43 am

Okay, so in a few weeks I'm moving to my Dad's house, and he honestly doesn't cook.

So I'll need to be learning how to make basic dishes for some nights. I've never cooked in my life (I only took cooking class once, I cooked once and skipped for the rest of the semester) I can't even boil an egg.

What are some simple dishes to cook so I can practise between now and the time I move there? It doesn't have to be stuff made straight from home, it can be packaged stuff, I just don't want real basic stuff like 2 minute noodles or anything you add water to and microwave.

Hamburger Helpers/Chicken/Tuna Helpers might be recommended. Any instructions are clearly listed and quite easy to follow. Making some dishes like spaghetti can be easy and if neither of you are particularly picky on seasonings and the such then it's SUPER easy.
Spaghetti:
1. Boil noodles approx. 12 minutes. You may add salt or Olive oil here. Not too much.
2. Buy a jar of sauce.
3. If you are into beef then cook it on a medium heat until thoroughly Brown. No pink. Drain grease.
4. Pour sauce over beef.
Tips on sauce: add a little sugar, try cooking it on a low simmer for 30mins-1hour with a small chopped onion and garlic in it.
Alfredo:
1. Boil fettuccine noodles approx 12.
2. Buy jar alfredo sauce.
3. Chicken can be cooked here in butter or Olive Oil. You may season with simple salt and pepper to begin.
4. Peas or a mixture of broccoli (mushrooms too) type veggies are great in alfredo dishes. Cook those appropriately.
5. Either cube chicken into 1 inch pieces or slices thinly. Cook very thoroughly.
6. Mix sauce with the optional veggies and chicken all together. Then serve on top of pasta.
TIP: Add Parmesan cheese to the alfredo sauce for a richer flavor. Try also adding garlic salt/powder or fresh garlic to the sauce. Delicioso!

QNA Here:

Egg: There are many ways to cook egg and many thing you can add depending on your preferences.

To cook Scrambled Ham and egg:
First wash your hands and gather all your supplies you need (i.e.: Pans,Food,Utensils, etc.)
Ratio:2 slices of ham for every 1 Large Egg

Cut ham with a small knife CARFULLY and seperate each piece makng sure most arent stuck together.

Set it aside and spray cooking spray on your pan and put it on low heat (1-2) just enough to warm it up.

In a bowl crack as many eggs desired following the the 2:1 ratio. After all eggs are cracked mix in ham and with a fork or whisk until only yolk can be seen.

By this time your pan should be warm. Carfully pour in the eggs and raise heat to medium(5-6).
An omlet will start to form so start moving it around and breaking it into smaller pieces.
When you think your done Taste a little bit of it and see if its cooked to your liking.

Serve and enjoy!

If you would like more easy dishes like speghetti and meatballs, Sloppy Joes, Chicken Salad, Eggdrop Soup, etc.

Bertolli is a brand of pasta. They sell freezer bags of already put together, restaurant quality pasta dishes. They are extremely simple to make. You open the bag, pour the contents in a skillet, and basically eat ten minutes later.

Also any homemade pasta dish can be relatively simple. You could boil water, throw in some pasta, wait til it is cooked, drain the water, then heat some sauce from a can and have pasta with sauce.

I can offer other instructions but I am not sure what types of food you like or are willing to make.

What about things like:

- Chicken (oven baked is probably easiest)
- Salads (many nice options here)
- Steaks
- Bolognese sauce (to go with pasta, or rice)
- Burgers (at home you can make these so they are quite healthy using lean mince)
- Tacos
- Roastbeef
