Its not just boys who can do that, don't be so sexist.
It really easy, you just have to keep your eyes out for the minature differences in styling, and ask lots of questions to your peers.
For example, the first VW Beetles had split rear windows and 'backwards' opening doors, in 1930ish the doors stopped being 'backwards', and the split rear window dissapred around 1950ish. How do I know all that? I ask questions [and usually get told way more than I want to know], I read books, I keep my eyes open when I'm looking at them.

As for why some people do this... I don't honsetly know, it sorta becomes a habit. For example, I bet when most girls shop for clothes or w/e they can tell just by looking at the style what shop it came from or what brand name it carries. Its also nice to flaunt one's skills, and I find it helps me appriciate a car more. [FYI I'm more into classics, so I don't know why any one would want to call a modern car 'sweet', they're mostly just ugly hunks of metal]

lol one thing i've noticed is that a lot of guys will try to impress girls with car knowledge. a lot of them don't even know what type of car drives by. i was with a friend and his girlfriend and an audi tt drives by, and he said... "oh that's the new volkswagon mini-beetle". well one way to tell is either the registration in the windshield on the drivers side, or the lights in the back of the car usually have the year really small on them somewhere.

I'm a girl, and I know the make and model of a lot of cars that drive past me, and I do point out good cars and laugh at the ricers. Some people are into, others aren't. Its all about who you are, what you like or what you've been raised around. My older brother knows anything and everything about every freaking car ever made and he pretty much passed it on and a lot of it rubbed off on me. Guys just seem to have a more common interest in cars, and it has a lot to do with the fact that girls dont really get into cars because its deemed a 'guy thing' which is why there are so many guys involved with this 'guy thing'.

Its an interesting cycle.

well this is like one of those things that fascinates guys and when u really like somthing u learn alot about it and try to keep it to be a large part of ur life just like women so
like a girl when it really likes somthing like fashion there life normaly revolves around it so u learn alot about it whats in and what out all that stuff
so it's that same way for a guy u learn about whats in and out and guys learn about cars and when u read about it and see pictures of the cars and read about what they can do u just remember it

but good luck with trying to understand

cars to some guys could be like a skirt in the display at the mall to you and other girls. its just something some guys love. see a guy could just as easily ask a question as to why a girl sees a pair of shoes and can tell you the designer its just something there interested in Just be happy hes checking out cars and not other girls.

How do you know what brand of clothing something is when you look at it? Or what kind of makeup the girl next to you is using? Boys who are interested in cars recognize them because thats what they like to look at and research. Girls do the same thing, just with different items. I know most guys cant even tell the difference between a tube of lipstick and foundation. If you want to become car savvy though, just listen to the males..they would probably be more than happy to teach you their ways.

Siren_Cytherea answered Friday July 30 2004, 6:53 pm:
LOL It comes from loving cars/loving to drive. The guy I was with in my freshman year used to be able to look out to the school's parking lot and say "ooh, nice...98' camry..." or something, and I'd always look at him like "...how the hell do you know what that IS?"
That's until I got my license, lol. I LOVE to drive, and I love cars. Because of this newfound fascination, I can now name cars the way my boyfriend can...it's amusing, to say the least.
Guys do that because they love cars. It's as simple as that, lol.
Hope I helped!

Every year the car models change. Different types of cars have different bumpers, windshield sizes, engines, and builds. We just know them.

Ronlina answered Friday July 30 2004, 4:51 pm:
Different models of cars will have a certain 'look' to them, and the year they were made will also make a difference in the characteristics of the model.

My boyfriend knows absoultely nothing about cars, their models, or even basic repair work. So when I see a particularly awesome car, I will point it out, but that doesn't necessarily mean he knew what it was beforehand.

Maybe some of the boys you hang out with just simply like cars - just like you are probably interested in things they know very little about.

i know what you mean, even my little brother (age 11) is always drooling at cars and planning on which one he's gonna save up his 5 dollar allowances for, and all my friends are amazed by cars cuz we're all turning 17 now and getting licenses...it can be annoying cuz i could care less but i just say things like i don't like that car - it's too squarish...hehe i kno that wasn't really advice, but at least u kno you're not alone!

First off, let me state the obvious...."ROFLMAO" Thank you for writing a very interesting and oh so funny question.... Guys do that just because they just plain out love cars...all makes and models...my husband is one of the world's worst for pointing out a make and model to me like i even care....next time he does that 2 you.... point out some useless information you know then maybe he'll get the point.

A lot of people look at new cars when they come out. I have a friend who spends a good deal of his time looking at new cars that have come out.

Also, when someone really lieks cars, they will often times attend auto shows. They might also talk to random people about their cars, thereby learning what what a certain make and model of a car looks like.

You leanr basically just by testing yourself. For example, the tops of Volvos have a very distinct shape. You just have to teach yourself if you want to know.
