Usually if you have that you are in the doctor's office pretty quickly because they are uncomfortable. If the infection had gone up into the kidney you will have back pain, especially just under the ribs on one side, and a fever, usually a high one. Sometimes people don't have these obvious symptoms, but suddenly get very ill and need to go to the emergency room. These don't clear up without an doctor, and an antibiotic.
