Question Posted Monday January 12 2004, 3:29 pm

I am a senior in highschool and once i graduate i would like to go into fashion designing or interior designing. I have "shadowed" an interior designer before and have helped people in their rooms with designs. I am also curretly designing my prom dress and would hopefully some day like to design my wedding dress. Just one concern.... What if i am totally out of my league and really have no clue with what i am doing. What if i go to college and major in this and then find out that it isnt for me? I guess its just a concern i have been having for awhile now, someone please give me advice. KT

it's completley cool that you're considering that as a major..sounds really exciting but many people go in not even knowing what they want to do...many people don't choose a major until their junior/senior year in college- and some switch them up many times...i even know people that went through college and came out still not knowing what they want to do...so you'll know once youre there- you have plenty of opportunities to do whatever you want to do..good luck =]
love elle

Dear KT,
I'm not even close to being in collage, but i think that you could never be out or your league if it's your dream. If you like the clothes that you make, then what does it matter? and you must know what you are doing if you have watched a pro work, and to top it all off you are designing your own dress! thats so amazing! you have nothing to worry about. this is the right profession for you!

You may be surprised. I'm IN college, and the first year, everyone has to take the same foundation arts courses anyway, if that's your department of study. Speaking from experience, I was quite amazed at the number of freshmen who were "art majors" who had no interest, skill or experience toward whatever they were taking classes in. It seemed to be quite prevalent among the Interior Design majors--they had no skills or drive, and knew that orange doesn't go with cream and brown any more, so they wanted to be Interior Designers. Lovely.

Nobody in the "real world" cares where you get your Bachelor's or what it contained--it's all about the Master's, what and where. Therefore, if you can handle the expense, the first 4 years of college don't really matter too much... like high school doesn't matter.
Trust me. And SAT's are absolutely NOT worth the harassment they give you about it. Most colleges demand an 1100 for entry and unless you want SAT scholarships, it's not worth any more energy output. One person I know got a 1430... and he's not doing anything more special in college than I am with my 1290.
It's overrated and... pretty pointless... like all the fuss about Christmas starting at the end of October. Come on, let's just have a week of Christmas cheer and get it over with. it's not worth all the bother...

Me too!!! Your so not out of your league but how far do think it'll take you. When I go to college I'm going to be a lawyer ('cause I want to, not that I have to). You'll need a back-up plan so either do a double major or do what I do. I 'm going to take distance training at 'Thompson education direct'.
I'm now attending Art Instruction School. It's a distance education learning program. You should do something like that. You get extra credits at your designing school if you do well.

You will never know unless you go for it. So.. go for it! Follow your dreams, life is short, don't waste it by wondering "what if?" all the time.

Dear KT,
I think you should follow your dreams and if you decide that what you major in isn't for you then i think you should go back to college and try to do something else if you really like designing then i would say go for it

Your major on your undergrad degree doesn't matter that much: some of the best computer types I know majored in creative writing, one of the neatest media theoryheads I know majored in theoretical physics... subsequent degrees and life experience can leverage the thinking and organizing skills you pick up in college into all kinds of stuff.

So, onward!

I would say go for it. You will be more likely to be successfull if you're in career that you really enjoy. You can always switch courses if you find out that this isn't what you really want to do but you will never know if you will not try.

FernGully answered Monday January 12 2004, 4:28 pm:
All you can do is plan for what you think you want now, if that changes.. well then it changes. There is always room to change your mind and who knows even if you find its not for you, it will probably have been fun and a great experience.

You cant hold back just because you are afraid of changing your mind later, what if later you realize you should have gone into fashion and design and you didnt go. Then you would be stuck wondering what if!

If right now thats what you think you want to do, then do it. If you've thought long and hard about it, then do it.

Trueflight answered Monday January 12 2004, 4:25 pm:
If you're not sure what you want to do, go to a liberal arts school (or a design school where you can audit from nearby schools or something) and take more than the minimum side classes... you can always double-major or minor in something completely different, if you don't end up changing your mind entirely. The best college education gives you life skills as well as job options, so don't be afraid to do a little branching out. (Great, I'm beginning to sound like my mother. XP)
