Hermit crabs!!!!

Question Posted Thursday December 18 2003, 12:56 am

I wanna start a hermit crab activist group in my state, because I, and others, believe that Hermit Crabs (land)are treated inhumanely. In pet stores they're always in tanks with out lights or heat lamps or spoges or the waters too deep and theyve all drowned in the water bowl. I HATE HOW THE POOR DEARS ARE TREATED!!
But i have my ways of getting them better living quaters. By Buying them all. like ....12 at a time from my local pet store....i buy every single one !!! Otherwise i go to the dude at the counter and tell him to clean out the tank once in a while. Or offer to clean it myself. Once i burst into tears cos all the poor little hermies were shell-less and food-less and it was AWFUL!!!

So Damnit, how can i get a group started in my town?? Can i spread the word around to my hermie friends and start an organisation that re homes them and adopts them??? Cos that would be cool.

Remember people- Hermit Crabs can live up to 120 years old in captivity, thses guys are pets for life, not just for christmas.

hell yeah. im gonna put this in random weirdos.....and no one will carea bout it and its go to hell.

For hermit crab activism, there's only one place to be: The Hermit Crab Association! Check out
www.hermitcrabassociation.com for more information and ways to get involved.

Find those other people metioned and meet with them once in a while to plan hermy events and adoption centers, maybe at a local church or community building. Or you could work through your school starting a hermit crab club and working through that.

First, I don't think you're a random wierdo. Any person who gives a damn about another living being is defintely not. Those that go through life, caring about nothing but themselves are the weirdos to me. Now, I'm not saying that every single body on the plaent has to take up arms and go save something on the endangered species list, but, at least care. It seems to me you're well on the way of starting that group you spoke of. You've already done a hell of a lot more than most people would. Offering to clean the tanks yourself was ( and IS ) a nice touch. If possible, why don't you put an ad in the local publication and see if anyone thinks the way you do. You'll never know. Or, make the most use of this cyberworld in which we live. Look for a "local" chat room and see if there's an option to create your own. If so, go from there. I commend you on your efforts this far. Keep it up.
Hey, can they REALLY live 120 years in captivity? I didn't know that. But then again, I didn't know much about hermit crabs to begin with. Thanks.

There is this site called meetup.com that helps you form meetings, flyers, and agendas. It may help you in getting an organization together. This would be along the same lines of the pet savers like [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
You might ask them how they got started. It would also help to write a letter to the manager of the pet store because you can't take all the hermits home and keep them healthy.

Hermit crabs are neat if you want to get people to consider them as a pet adopt them or start caring you can make a flyer to hang up about the good aspects of them then left people know you have some... tell friends, talk to random people (good luck though) anything to get more people aware and interested in the crabs...

If your in high school you could always do volenteer work. So that way your helping the crabs and yourself! Get some friends together and start volenteer work in the pet store. Otherwise let the manager know what a cruddy job his employes are doing. Im sure he'll fix that.

If there's an SPCA or some such group around, they may be able to help you get organised... otherwise, I guess start at your school and see if you can start up a "Solidarity for Hermit Crabs' Rights" group or something...

Personally, I'd work towards releasing them in the wild and pressuring your city/state/province to enact a law that bans collection of hermit crabs and keeping them as pets.
