hair dye
I want to dye my hair blue... no... I MUST dye my hair blue! bright blue! the problem is that I have dark hair and I've never dyed it before and I think I have to bleach it blonde first then dye it blue for the color to show up. Is that going to ruin my hair and make it all crackly and nasty?

it wont if you use bleach that is meant for your hair, not the laundry kind. my friend spencer recently dyed his hair pink, and he first needed to bleach it, so yes, bleach it before putting color into it, ESPECIALLY if you have dark hair..

Do NOT dye it twice the same day. Don't even bother going to blonde. Dye it blue right off the bat. Wait about a week and dye it again. Keep dying it every week to two weeks until you get it to the blue you want. My hair is Cherry Black and when I put blue streaks in it--It turned an interesting dark blue at first...then I did it again and it kept getting bluer and bluer until I got my desired blue. Don't even bother going blonde. Bad mistake.

hey!you don't have to bleach it... all you have to do is prelighten it. (just dye it blonde) trust me i have really dark hair and just highlighted it red

My friend dyed her hair blue, and she has naturally dark hair. She got it bleached, and then dyed, but my Mom, who's a hairstylist, said that they can do it w/o bleach.

Use Kool-aid, it doesn't make your hair all gross and stuff. Talk to a stylist about bleaching.

Don't let it run its mouth at you. Remember YOU own your hair, YOU grew it, and YOU can hack it off at the roots if it shows you any nasty lip. That said, Yes use bleach, and For gods sake don't use Manic Panic unless it's just a weekend bluing. Nothing will stick to untreated/unbleached hair unless you process it first. You could dye it blonde or just bleach it straight out. I recommend finding a Sally's Beauty Supply near you or some other small salon-supply store. They usually carry bleaches and dyes. I find Special Effects and Punky Professional work the best for my hairs. Punky Professional has the added perks of smelling like various fruit flavors. Nice.

I've been in the same situation- I have dark brown hair but bleached it first and then dyed it blue...
The bleach didnt really hurt my hair, but like others said I'd use lots of gentle conditioner and moisturizer... And while its dyed go low on the blow drying.
I went to a professional salon but I dont reccomend it. I went twice and they really didnt know what they were doing either time. Yes that sounds arrogant but none of the several places I contacted had any experience with unnatural colors like blue. I'd say just do it yourself. And Special Effects blue comes out within two weeks :/ I do not recommend it.

Yes, you must bleach it first. If you want to assure that your hair comes through all the chemical processes relatively healthy, I would suggest going to a reputable hair salon/stylist. Don't feel weird; they'll do anything you pay them for just about. If you are female, I would strongly suggest this route because unlike a guy, you can't just wack it all off if it comes out bad (well you CAN, but...they just have more freedom). Trust me on this.

I'm a little iffy on the blue, personally... in my experience, it fades to a weird green-grey. Be prepared to dye it back again (or to something else) when that starts to happen. Redder colors don't have that problem.

yes. Bleach before colour. Just use loads of conditioner after the treatment. Be careful though, in my experience, blue tends to fade quite quickly.

Um, I think Turc might be basing advice on one experience.
As a general rule, the proteins in hair are oxidised by all dyes, and by bleach especially. The proteins are cross-linked - which gives them their strength and flexibility - and these links have to be broken to some extent so that the atoms which make up the melanins in your hair can be broken away and washed out. Do you really want to do this to your hair?
You could try, as a first approximation, a non-permanent blue dye, to see how it looks. You could also try out a wig, for effect, just to see if it is the color you want, or that you actually want to go through the whole process.
or you could lighten your hair - use a good quality hair bleaching product - and go the whole hog. It will take about six months to get your real hair back, and once won't ruin your hair; but honestly, conditioner, or even good nutrition, won't keep your hair good-looking over a long period of bleaching and recoloring. The effects on your scalp, follicles, and hair roots will be unpleasant on a long-term basis.
