Advicenators Frequently Asked Questions

How to Ask Questions

How do I ask a question to just one person?
Visit the person's advice column and click the "Ask ___ A Question" link. (usually right under their name, or right under their picture if they have one). You'll then be sent to the question asking page, where you'll ask a question only for them.

Can I ask a question without registering or logging in?
Sure, but you can only ask it to one person at a time, and you will not receive e-mail notification when your question gets answered.

Can I ask the same question to a couple people?
No. We delete duplicate questions. Either ask your question to one person, or ask it to the whole site.

Can I use HTML in a question?
We don't think there's any reason to format questions using HTML, and too many people screw it up anyway which is a big problem since you can't edit questions.

Can I edit a question?
No. People don't want your question changing on them after they've answered it (or worse yet, while they're answering it).

Can I delete a question?
Sort of. Go to "your questions" and check the "delete" boxes and click the button and the questions will no longer be shown on your list of questions, columnist inboxes, or on the question browsing pages. If a columnist has already answered the question, it will still show up in his or her column. Also, the question still lives in the database connected to you, so our level II moderators will still see it as yours.

I left out an important part of my question, how do I add more information to it?
Click the side link that says "Your Questions". Click on the question name that you want to update. Then click the link that says "add additional information if you want".

Where is additional information shown?
Additional information is shown to the advice columnists when they're answering your question. It is not shown on the question summary page where people go to look for questions to answer. It is also not shown on advice columns.

How long does it take for my question to be approved?
If all the moderators are away, your question will appear on the site in three hours whether it's approved or not. Often it only takes 30 minutes or so for a question to be approved though. Of course, there's always a chance that your question may not be approved at all, but there's more on that topic down below.

If you're a level II moderator, your question will go straight to the viewing pages without needing to be approved first.

Who gets to see that I asked a question?
If anyone ever gets your password, they'll be able to see it. People doing searches for, say, "questions asked by 18 year old females" will be able to detect some information about you, even if they don't know it's you. Site administrators (level 2 and 3, about 15 people total) can see who asks what question if they go through the trouble of looking it up. Usually they don't, because we're pretty lazy people.

What does "chatspeak detected" mean?
If you ask a question that uses excessive chatspeak, we won't post it. Our form searches for awful chatspeak words (lyke, ur, u, kewl, omg, lol) and will tell you to go back and fix your post if you sound like a chatspeak user.

Should I use people's real names in questions?
No. But you also shouldn't use blank spaces, or letters, because it's annoying. And there's also no need to tell everyone you've changed the names, because that's fairly obvious to all of us.

If you must use names, pick some random names to sub in so the question makes perfect sense but the privacy of your friends is protected.

Also, never make up a name in place of yourself ("Let's say I'm JOHN and JOHN likes JENNY...") because that's also fairly annoying. Just use "I". Overcomplicated questions get rated down and deleted all the time.

When should I delete my question?
We're not really sure why anyone wants to delete questions, we just added that feature because it was widely requested. Most people never delete questions, but maybe it really bugs you to have it in your questions list, or maybe you're sick of getting answers to it. Most people like getting all the answers they can, so they'll leave the question out there forever which is totally cool.
