Q: I clicked their names ask them a question and all fo a sudden it appears int he public, im so madd!
Advice columnists can chose to reject a question, in which case it becomes public or gets deleted, depending on which boxes you checked. If you think there's another error and your question didn't end up at the right place, let me know.

Q: I think that there should be someway to make these columns stand out more. There have been barely any questions and everyone has to answer the same people. I also think that there should be some way to know who is qualified to answer these questions, I saw some advise telling people that they are stupid or to get a life. Shouldn't that be wrong for this site?
There'll be more questions as the site gets bigger... remember, we're still new. You can help us out by telling all your friends about your advice column and by asking questions... I mean, c'mon, what's with people complaining about not enough questions when you're all registered users who are welcome to ask for stuff?

As for bad advice, you'll just have to run around and give good advice to make up for it. I think sometimes people are stupid and do need to get a life, so that's not always bad advice. It's just blunt. right?

Q: Okay Im shay*shay and my column is really bugging me. To read my questions and answers I must move the screan to the other side and I hate doing that. I like scrolling down the pages able to see all of it. Please fix that.
-shay :-)
Hi Shay, you rule! Anyway, I intend to work on making more layout thingies for people, but for now I'd recommend a new user picture... the one you have now is like 350 pixels wide and it's stretching out the side column. People with small user pictures don't have the problem with the horizonal scroll thing. Eventually I may fix the site so you can have a wide picture like that, but for now I'd recommend that you find a smaller one.

Q: You should really think about having the sites color changed. A nice light blue of green would never hurt anyboby. Its just yellow is cuch a DULL color! Thanx!!
Yes, advicenators needs some design changes... when I first made the site I was much more concerned about whether or not the code worked instead of how the site looked. We might try some new things over the next few months. I'm always happy to hear suggestions or comments on the design, so if you see something that's changed, let me know if you like it or not.

Q: Im very sorry! I may be asking a very stupid question, but I dont understand the meaning of "link to us". What does puting a little picture on a column sposed to do?
That's more for people with other web pages who want to link to advicenators. Your column already has links to the advicenators home page so that doesn't matter much, but if you have other websites and want to tell the world you have an advice column, you can use a code from our Link To Us page to do it.

Q: people r sucj hipocrits on here most of u guys dont even know what u r talkin bout
Okay, well, no one's forcing you to come here.

Q: I read in someone's LJ recently that the person wasn't certain where new members were coming from for this site.

Since the same person has a website that has three cookies, not one, like this site, why not use a referrer cookie if referrer site not known from log? Looks like one of them on that site is of that sort (best guess).

(Only cookie used here iis an "identifier" like other site has, although having that one may prevent attachment of others on return visit.)

Saw a site the other day with a bunch of cookies for sale for assorted platforms and languages. Lots of sites sell them for $5.00 to $15.00. Probably can obtain opensource for -0-. Yer gettin pretty fancy with this PHP stuff and should be able to handle it alright. :)
I'm not terribly concerned with where everyone comes from... and enough people get mad about cookies that I'd just assume keep our number low. I am asking people who register where they heard of us... I think that's better because really, who cares where people came from if they don't register?

cookies for sale? I don't get it... they're super-easy to write, it's one line of code! Must investigate this... if someone is getting $5 for cookies, I should be in a new business ;)

Q: I imagine it's a policy migration thing, but I answered a question on a certain popular musician from Napanee and wanted to add some info and see what other answers had accumulated... and it had disappeared without a trace.

It's not hard to guess, but is the not-naming policy in force over here, or had someone posted something really abusive after I'd been through?
Ewe, sorry, I kinda went on a question-deleting rampage tonight because there were a few really stupid ones. I mean, this is an advice site... asking questions about what Harrison Ford is wearing to the oscars or other celebrity-related things have nothing to do with advice. So I cleaned up a bit.

In the future I promise to pay more attention and not delete things that lots of people have answered.

Q: Why is it when I read about registering to become an Advice Columnist and click on the link it says I'm already registered and calls me a dork!!!

OK so I'm old and stoopid, but little OP girlie that link should be to information or signup (the latter is most logical) to become an advisor.

Kindly fix your navigation link little (presently) Aircap chickie.

Thanks. :)
Changed the message to present more info - it only displays that if you're logged in with a username and everything. Seriously! Try it again.

Oh, and I'm no OP girlie. I have sedgwick county plates and everything now now, TYVM.

Q: Okay Okay this is driving me crazy! Why the hell are those weird underlined words in my column?? that take you to a search!!!??? IM GOING NUTS HERE!!!!!PLEASE GET RID OF IT!!!!!!
Um... I have no idea. That is not a feature we've installed, that sounds like something your browser is automatically doing... my advice is to run AdAware or something to check for programs you might have installed that you don't know about. Currently, Advicenators is not linking to any search engines. We don't even have our own search up yet, that's how not into searches we are.

Q: How come my column wont hold more then 6 pages?
Because there was a bug in the pagination scripts. HA! It should be fixed now, I found the issue.

In other news... 6 pages?! Damn that's a lot of answers.

Q: Is it possible to change usernames on Advicenators? When I set up, I foolishly chose a different username (ehortop) here than on spacefem.com (metawidget)... for consistency's sake, if it's not too hard I'd like to change my name here to metawidget.

If it's not, that's OK, it's just the perfectionist in me speaking.

Cheers

ehortop
Username changes get weird because it changes the URL of your advice column, so if you've been promoting that or anything you might not want to change your name. When the site gets big, username changes probably won't be allowed at all just because it'll take too much work. But for now, I'd be happy to change it... just send me a confirmation e-mail (admin@advicenators.com) and I'll go in and change it, no problem.

Q: What about implementing a way to allow the posters of questions to choose whether or not to remain anonymous? Perhaps a check box?

I don't really see a reason for this, because if someone really wants to leave his/her name, they can just put it in the question box along with the question. I'll consider it though, if more people ask for it. It wouldn't be difficult.

Q: Not to toot my own horn or anything... but why do some people get featured on the main page like everyday and other people don't. I love the people that get featured all the time but it's not fair to everyone else you know.

thanks :D
Hey, requirements for featured user are the same as they've always been. Make sure you:

Have a picture of yourself on your column (you can do this on your settings page)
Have some bio information down (you can also do this on your settings page)
Have "yes" checked for the featured user option (you can do this on your settings page, too)
Have at answered at least 14 questions
Have updated your column in the last 24 hours

After that, who gets featured is totally random, I don't pick people every day or anything, a script does it I promise.

Q: Now that you've updated the feedback/suggestion page to this one that I'm using now, you ought to change the link on the bottom of the "About Us" page to reflect that.
~dolphinlover
how right you are! it's done now.

Q: How do you delet your asked questions?
You can't. If you could, it'd screw everything up because people who gave advice would have to change or delete theirs and that's not fair, so once a question is posted, only site administrators can change or delete it.

Q: Each time I get a e-mail saying I have a new message in my inbox, I click on the inbox (which mind you saids I have an unread question) and well it tells me I have none... I don't get it!
We are currently troubleshooting this issue. From now on, you can forward these e-mails to admin@advicenators.com and it might help us dig into the situation.

Q: Need a random columnist feature, kind of like the random question feature.
Your wish is my command! The random column feature is at http://advicenators.com/randomc.php.

Q: Okay how many times can you be a fetured columnist?-shay
Infinity times. Every night when the script looks at who can be it (official columnists with a picture who've updated in the last 24 hours) it picks a person at random, and doesn't care if you've been featured before. But it's not very likely that it'll happen to you often. Last night, for instance, there were 35 "candidates", which is about average, so chances are you'll only be featured once a month or so... less as the site gets bigger.

This advice column is for suggestions, comments, or error reporting about advicenators. If you'd like to suggest a new category, ask me a question. If you'd like to whine, bitch, or complain about advicenators, you may whine, bitch, or complain to me.

Three rules though:
1) Do not ask me for life advice. We have several thousand other members that do that.

2) Do not ask for help, or ask how to do something, or ask about
how something on the site works, unless you've read every word of our help pages and you're sure it's not addressed there.

3) Do not ask me to ban someone or investigate abuse. We have an entire abuse system set up for that.

If you disobey one of these rules, I'll delete your question.

Some guidelines about suggestions:
If you offer a suggestion that I find interesting, I might just ignore your question so it stays in my inbox as a reminder of something to do. Don't be upset that I don't answer you, and don't delete your questions (because then I'll forget!)

If you have three suggestions, please ask three separate questions, that way I can address each one individually. It's a real pain when people ask one question with like twenty different topics in it; I can't keep them straight.
